The MDOT QC/QA Concrete Technician Class 2 certification is required by MDOT for any agency or private personnel who sample and/or conduct certain tests on concrete aggregates and adjust for variations in aggregate moisture for quality control, quality assurance, or acceptance purposes. Such personnel may include employees of the agency, contractors, testing labs, material suppliers, and consultants. The program also covers some basic concrete fundamentals.
MDOT Class 2 certification is a one and one-half day program. The first day is dedicated to classroom lectures. The written examination is given on the morning of the second day.
Class 2 covers the following:
- Standard Practice for Sampling Aggregates (AASHTO T2)
- Reducing Samples of Aggregate to Testing Size (AASHTO T248)
- Sieve Analysis of Fine and Coarse Aggregates (AASHTO T27)
- Total Moisture Content of Aggregate by Drying (AASHTO T255)
- Adjustment of Batch Weights for Aggregate Moisture
- Portland Cement Concrete: Introduction and Fundamentals
Course details and study materials will be mailed to registrants in advance. The study materials include some pre-course practice problems. These are designed to help students assure their preparedness for the calculations that will be required. If you have difficulty with any of these calculations, you are advised to complete a math refresher before taking the class. Certification candidates should bring the mailed study materials, pencils, erasers, and a calculator to class with them.
The course reviews basic materials regarding aggregate testing, and serves to supplement a technician's general knowledge. It is not, however, appropriate for people without any concrete experience, and will be difficult for anyone without basic math skills and anyone who does not adequately prepare before classes begin. The program is designed to certify individuals who are experienced and competent in testing concrete and aggregate for the purpose of quality control. There is basic instruction on the topics covered by the test, but lectures are not designed to certify individuals who are novices in the industry in only two days.
MDOT Class 2 certification requires passing an open-book written examination that includes individual sections on each of the related AASHTO standards and other classroom topics. Students have two hours to complete the test. Passing requires an overall score of at least 80, with no individual section score below 70. You will have one opportunity to re-test on any failed test section(s) within 60 days.
MDOT Class 2 certification requires and is contingent upon holding current ACI Grade 1/MDOT Class 1 certification.
MDOT Class 2 certification is valid for five years. Re-testing is required for renewal.
