MDOT Class 3

MDOT Class 3 certification concludes the MDOT QC/QA Concrete Technician Certification series. It is required for personnel who design concrete mixes, make field adjustments to mixes, and/or conduct various laboratory procedures and tests of concrete and aggregates. Technicians needing this certification may include employees of MDOT, contractors, testing labs, material suppliers, and consultants.

Class 3 is a two and a half day program. The first and second days are dedicated to classroom instruction and include a visit to the MDOT Central Laboratory. The course concludes with the written examination on the morning of the final day.

Class 3 certified technicians are qualified to conduct certain field and laboratory tests on aggregates and concrete, and to design and make field adjustments to concrete mixes. The program covers the following:

Unit Weight & Voids in Aggregate (AASHTO T19)
Specific Gravity & Absorption of Fine Aggregate (AASHTO T84)
Specific Gravity & Absorption of Coarse Aggregate (AASHTO T85)
Making and Curing Concrete Test Specimens in the Laboratory (AASHTO T126)
Capping Cylindrical Concrete Specimens (AASHTO T231)
Compressive Strength of Cylindrical Concrete Specimens (AASHTO T22)
Use of Admixtures
Cementitious Materials
Principles of Mix Design
Standard Specifications for Ready Mix Concrete (AASHTO M157)
MDOT's Special Provision No. 907-804-13 - Concrete for Bridges & Structures
Data Management

Students will receive their study materials when they arrive at the class. All candidates for Class 3 certification should be aware that this fast-paced curriculum is intended for the advanced-level technician who is proficient in mathematics, including basic algebra, and is already somewhat familiar with various laboratory procedures. Technicians who are not confident with their mathematics proficiency should complete a refresher course before undertaking Class 3 certification.

ACI Concrete Flatwork Finisher Class

This course is designed for designed for building industry professionals including concrete contractors, finishers, and inspectors, homebuilders, technicians and troubleshooters, architects and engineers, and public works employees. Students will learn techniques to avoid common flatwork finishing problems including:

• Basic Concrete Technology

• Concrete Materials & Mix Proportioning

• Concrete Control Tests

• Placing and Finishing Tools

• Basic Finishing Techniques for Concrete Flatwork

• Placing & Finishing Slabs on Grade

• Curing & Protection of Concrete

This class has a full day of instruction followed by a written test. There are performance work requirements which will be reviewed in class.

* Golf Tournaments: Friday Golf Tournament (Dogfight) - Each golfer will pay with whomever you would like and there are no set teams, and you play off your own ball with a starting tee time of whenever you like. Then at the end of the playing you are randomly drawn to be paired with one other person for scoring. Saturday Golf Tournament (Scramble) - This tournament will consists of four player teams in a scramble format and you play the best ball on each hole.

ACI Concrete Strength Testing Technician

This program requires a working knowledge of the following ASTM Standards:

C 617 Capping Cylindrical Specimens

C 1231 Unbonded Caps for Concrete Cylinders

C 39 Compressive Strength of Cylindrical

Concrete Specimens

C 78 Flexural Strength of Concrete

ACI will only grant certification to those applicants who have a passing grade on the ACI written examination as well as successful completion of the ACI performance examination. The performance examination requires actual demonstrations of the required ASTM Standards.

Space is limited to 20 per class on a first come, first served basis.

This is now a two-day course which will comprise one full day of classroom instruction followed by a day for performance and written testing.

This course is a pre-requisite for MDOT Class 3.

ACI Aggregate Testing Technician Level 1/MDOT Class 2

MDOT Class 2 ~ ACI Aggregate Testing Technician, Level 1

ACI Aggregate Testing, also called MDOT Class 2, is for a technician performing any of the following tests on aggregates for concrete:

· Sampling Aggregates

· Reducing Samples of Aggregate to Testing Size

· Materials Finer than No. 200 Sieve in Mineral Aggregates by Washing

· Sieve Analysis of Fine & Coarse Aggregates

· Specific Gravity & Absorption of Coarse/Fine Aggregate

· Total Moisture Content of Aggregate by Drying

· Organic Impurities in Fine Aggregate

Space is limited to 20 per class on a first come, first served basis. Class space is held only after receipt of completed registration form and payment. Registration is not complete until payment is received. No confirmation or study guide will be sent until payment is received by MCIA.

This course is a pre-requisite for MDOT Class 3.

MDOT Class 1 ACI Grade 1 Field Testing Technician (MDOT Class 1)

MDOT Class 1 ~ ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician, Grade 1

This class covers field testing of fresh concrete. ACI Grade 1 certification is valid for five years and then must be renewed. Grade 1 certification covers the following procedures:

ASTM C172 Sampling

ASTM C143 Slump

ASTM C138 Unit Weight

ASTM C173 Air Content Volumetric Method

ASTM C231 Air Content Pressure Method

ASTM C31 Molding Cylinders

ASTM C1064 Temperature

Space is limited to 80-100 participants. This two-day course involves a full day of classroom instruction. The following day will start with written testing and will then move to the designated MDOT facility for field testing. Certification is only granted to those who pass both written and performance testing. This course is a pre-requisite for MDOT Class 3.

2012 Certification Classes Retest Registration

Retest Registration

Written Retest Requirements: In order to re-test you must have been fully registered for that class in the last 12 months. Class 3 students have to retake only the section(s) they failed. Students in Class 1, Class 2 and Strength Testing, must re-take the entire test.

Cost: The retest fee is $150 and must be paid prior to taking the test. (MDOT will be invoiced separately, but participants must still register.)

What to Bring: Photo ID, Study Guide, Calculator and Pencils

Performance testing will not be offered on this date. If you need to retake the performance exam for any of these classes, you must make special arrangements with Robert Varner at 601-856-2332 or rvarner@bcdgeo.com.
